MIDI - PT Mod Wheel automation recording

Maybe it's something i'm not getting. I can automate and record the Volume. But for some reason after I have recorded a passage and want to go back and play the mod wheel - it doesn't automate/record (like a volume graph will) Naturally if I arm the track it will erase the notes i played but then record the mod wheel automation. It must be something silly, right? thanks

You need to be in record mode and have MIDI merge turned on.
