Slight issue guys and gals!! Was drivin along the other day, bout 80mph, when lost drive completely, the engine would still rev, but the car seemed to slow down slightly instead of pickin up speed, after the third rev, a saw a puff of blue smoke(which really S*^t the guy tail gating me) and then i decided to turn the engine off and cruise in 'N' to a layby, Now i know this ain't gonna be an easy cheap fix, but without scaremongering!!, has anybody experienced this before, common problem? I've got an 850 auto with just under 150k on the clock running LPG(which was great by the way) So any help on this matter would be lovely, i love the car so i don't want to scrap it! but she only cost me 900quid to start with, so just a bit worried about figures... ;) thanks
Never heard that one before?! Maybe it was the LPG which buggered your lump? A mechanic friend of mine doesn't rate LPG at all and says that it damages your engine (i don't know how much truth there is in that because he is a bit of a Yahoo) but could be a trigger? I also cant believe that you coasted in neutral with the ignition off!!! Big No No in an auto, and also by doing this you loose power to the breaks, especially from that speed!!! Good luck in finding your fault!

done with volvo's?! and as you said it was your lack of maintenace that caused the problem ??! Didn't the oil warning light come on? and yes, should never turn the engine off when in motion, loose brakes/power steering, you get about one stab at the brake pedal and that's it! Good luck with your savings! vipes
i have been told the same about lpg its classed a very dry burning substance unlike petrol. as for engine damige you should be able to find one in a scrappy or big breakers yard and if its front wheel drive wont be to bad to fit if its back wheel drive then its easyer

You could have a look round for a tatty one with a good engine and swap bits over. I would cost it all up before you plunge. Hows the rest of the car, is it just the engine? If you can find another 850 it may be worth buying and building one car out of two. It's a shame about the engine but volvos are getting cheaper to run/maintain thanks to motor factors and the tinterweb.
