question 1: My 2007 S80 has a button on the dash/keyfob that is supposed to open the boot. when i press the keyfob when locked it disarms the alarm. when i press the button on dash it does not seem to do anything. when i pressed the keyfob button on my 2002 S60 it actually unlatched the lock so the boot could be just lifted up. i would have thought that the button on the dash would have also unlatched the boot as well. can anyone clarify this please? question 2: My previous 2002 S60 2.0 petrol averaged approx 24mpg around town on the computer. my 2007 S80 2.4 Diesel is only averaging approx 21mpg around town. is this correct? the Volvo literature states 28mpg around town. thanks for the help guys!
Q1) Not sure but I know with my V70 I need to hold the button down on the fob for a couple of seconds to open the boot. Q2) MPG! Right, this is the big one. The new V70/S80 diesels are woeful compared with their older relative. The reasons are multiple - firstly there is the weight, a new S80 is a lot heavier than the S60. Secondly the modern EU4 engines require a burn cycle to clear the particulate filter, and thirdly - if you are mated to an automatic - you will find that takes quite a while to warm up -forcing revs up and the cost of consumption. If you do a lot of short town journeys from cold, and don't drive particularly smoothly, you won't get very good consumption. Over the last 5 tanks - I have averaged about 35mpg - from a 80/20 motorway/urban split.
I'd just like to throw my 2p worth in here as well. If you are reading this and have not yet bought a new model V70 2007 on, or a S80 diesel the fuel consumption is terrible, I am still only getting 27mpg around town were 99% of our driving is being done at present and then every 2 months you have to take it for a drive of over 20 miles to clear the soot filter out if you don't want to end up the dealers to have them do it for you. Oh and it struggles to do more than 40mpg at a steady 70mph on a flat road. When we were ordering the car I don't remember being told about the woeful fuel consumption or the soot problems. Our last car was an X-trail 2.2 diesel which wasn't slow and averaged 37mpg. It wasn't much lighter either. Thanks rant over. Brian.

Not really what i wanted to hear! nevermind i have bought it now. i did genuinely think it would be easier on the fuel consumption seeing as it is a diesel. still love the car though!

I have clocked through 20,000km now - and it is settling out to around 35mpg. This is 80% at 80mph on the motorway and 20% town driving + numerous defrosting starts at sub-zero temperatures. I am pretty happy with that. At 107kmh on cruise - around 67mph - it averages around 50mpg
I agree with everyone on the thread I have a S80 D5 manual and it struggles to do 35MPG on my 70 mile journey to work mostly A roads and motorway. If I drive at 50 to 60MPH I can coax 40MPG but this is nowhere near as good as my old S60 which was doing 48MPG average when I sold it. I take on board the car is heavier but I think its only 50KG and you can see the consumption increase when its burning off the soot which seems to be far too often, but the issue I have is that Volvo are allowed to quote official fuel consumption figures of 44MPG combined and 53MPG (higher than those quoted for the S60) extra Urban these are a joke and there is no way this car is capable of achieving those figures. I think I should contact Trading Standards. I was told that things would improve with mileage and after the first service, I have now done 17,000 miles and its had a 12 month service and the fuel consumption has got worse. Just for comparison a friend has the X5 twin turbo 3L diesel which he drive hard and that returns 28MPG and thats got 4 wheel drive, auto box, another hundred horse power and its half a tonne heavier! Johnny - it might be worth getting the codes read. Mine was done after around 8000km when city economy was around 18mpg! They found a very high oxygen reading - which was causing overfueling. They the applied a couple of new bits of software. I registered at SpiritMonitor.de which is worth doing to see how you compare with other drivers.
dodgyken Thanks for the information, I am going to raise the fuel consumption again with the garage, I will ask them to check the codes, its in tomorrow for the satnav fixing it won't retain preferences such as miles rather that Km and I need them to check a couple of over glitches. I get a brief headlight failure warning every morning from a cold start, there is no problem with the active xenons and it doesn't retain the message, also after roughly the same amount of time on my way to work I get a BLIS reduced function message. I will take a look at website you mention. I love the car its just the fuel consumption is a disappointment Thanks for your help J
Johnny - the message from the xenons appears to happen if the headlight covers are iced over - the software seems to struggle to get the level right - I have had it a few times on mine. Fuel consumption is one of the smallest costs compared with depreciation - so don't stress :D :D
